Biography

CURRENT POSITION:

I am currently a PhD candidate in the Cell and Developmental Biology Program of the Medical College of Wisconsin. I transferred from the joint Translational Science PhD program of UT Health San Antonio, UT Austin, and UTSA after obtaining a Certification in Translational Science. My background is in Obstetrics and Gynaecology where I have played leading roles in reproductive health research, particularly in research involving the prevention and management of co-infections and reproductive health challenges of people living with HIV. I have also been involved with research into strategies for the prevention of reproductive tract malignancies.  Through the PhD in CDB, I am transitioning into research involving the epigenetics of endocrine-sensitive breast cancer. My proposed thesis is entitled “The Crosstalk between The Tumour Microenvironment and Epigenetic Regulation in Endocrine Resistant Breast Cancer”. The overarching goal of this thesis is to discover new immunological pathways for Breast cancer therapy using the principles of Epigenetics, Immunology and Bioinformatics

PAST POSITIONS:

Prior to the commencement of the PhD program, I was Deputy Director and later Director of maternal and reproductive health research, Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist and adjunct Senior Lecturer in Reproductive Physiology, at the Department of Physiology, Eko University of Medicine, EkoUNIMED.Lagos, Nigeria. I joined the Institute in September 2013 because of my desire to pursue a career in health research. I was the coordinator of the PMTCT clinic of the Institute, and I revamped a specialist gynaecological clinic to research the gynaecological needs of patients infected with HIV infection and initiated the use of Implanon for fertility regulation in these patients.

Before I was appointed Deputy Director, of Maternal and Reproductive Health research, I was a Chief Research Fellow and Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research between September 2013 to Dec 2017. Before this position, I was a Consultant Obstetrician and gynaecologist at the Lagos Island Maternity Hospital Lagos between 2011 and 2013, where I was involved in leading the residency training in obstetrics and gynaecology. I was the Principal Investigator for the “WOMAN” trial for Lagos Island Maternity Hospital during that time. I also won a training grant on maternal and perinatal health from the Japan International Corporation Agency (JICA) for three weeks and returned to use the skill to improve service delivery at the hospital. Through these experiences, I have authored six books in the field of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, contributed book chapters, and published over fifty articles in peer-reviewed journals.

OTHER EXPERIENCES:

I served as an internationally accredited Mediator and Arbitrator. This helped to improve my dispute-resolution ability and administrative competence. I am a Centre for Effective Dispute Resolution (CEDR), the United Kingdom accredited Mediator.  After my certification exams to be an arbitrator, I became the first Nigerian Medical Doctor to pass the Membership and the Fellowship examination of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators of the UK (FCIArb). I was a member of the Lagos Panel of Neutrals of the Lagos Multidoor House (LMDC). At the LMDC, I was a faculty member and led in dispute resolution in the healthcare industry. Furthermore, I founded pregnancynigeria.com, a leading blog that provides support to pregnant women with authentic reproductive health information and guidance all through their pregnancy and beyond.
